For most models until 2005, Moto Guzzi requires a moly additive to the gear lube in the rear drive. Guzzi has never called for an additive to the engine nor to the transmission.

Though somewhat rare, we have found an appropriate additive, made right near here in Bremerton (so we really didn’t have to look very far), called Power Punch Extreme Pressure Gear Oil Additive. The V700 and Ambassador are not specified to use a moly additive. We think it’s safe to assume the reason is simply that this requirement was added after these models had been produced. Since all subsequent models until recently called for it, we’re sure these early bikes would benefit from the addition as well. Some other early big-twin parts books don’t mention the additive in the model specifications listings while their service manuals do. For truly new models from the Aprilia Era, the moly recommendation disappeared. Asking for confirmation from Guzzi, we learned that all models with newly-designed rear drive gears, the fuel-injected 750s, V9s, and newly-developed 2005-on big twins (not V11-series or California 1100s) do not need moly although the recommendation remains in affect for all other models for which it was previously specified

So moly yes: any shaft-drive V-twin through 2004 except Breva 750 and Nevada 750. Also, California Vintage and Black Eagle through 2012. No moly required for: 1200s, 1400s, CARC bikes (single-sided swingarm, V9s, V7s, Breva/Nevada 750s.
